Dekadal rainfall total

Highlights:

  • The rainfall situation in the country has significantly improved during the dekad. Recorded rainfall amounts during the dekad varied across the country.
  • Highest dekadal totals in the western third ranged Early Warning Bulletin for Food Security in The Gambia 2 between 34.1mm over Banjul to 51.2mm over Kerewan.
  • In the middle third, dekadal totals were lowest over Jenoi (52.2mm) and highest (128.4mm) over Kaur. Whereas in the eastern third dekadal totals were 34.4mm and 76.4mm over Fatoto and Basse respectively.
Seasonal rainfall total

Highlights:

  • Seasonal rainfall total has increased significantly across all the region in the country, ranging from 408.5mm over Kerewan to 645.3mm over Sapu.
Dekadal extreme temperature

Agrometeorological Situation:

  • Average temperatures during this dekad were slightly higher than the previous dekads, temperatures range from 28.0 oC, over the western third to 32oC over the middle third of the country. Extreme temperatures reached a minimum of 21 oC in the western third, whereas maximum temperatures were as high as 35.3oC in the middle third of the country.
  • Relative humidity on average was above 80% throughout the country. Due tom increased cloud coverage, Average Sunshine reduced to 5hours during the dekad. Winds were low occasionally moderate in speed, with a maximum gust of around 80km/h recorded in the eastern third of the country.

Summary:

Rainfall: Improved rainfall, with heavy rains and thunderstorms during the dekad.
Agriculture: Crop performance is good; maize and millet production increased. Delays due to uneven rainfall.
Pests: Fall armyworm affecting maize/millet; Quelea birds damaging rice.
Livestock: Adequate water; access to grazing limited; cattle disease outbreak in Central River Region.
Disaster: 9,699 people affected by weather-related incidents; 2,672 displaced.
Recommendations: Provide farming tools, seeds, and fertilizers on time.
