Fouta Djallon Highlands

Preservation and development of natural resources of the environment in The Gambia

Fouta Djallon Highlands

The Regional Programme for the Integrated Development of the Fouta Djallon Highlands was launched in 1981 by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and participating countries, including The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, with backing from the international community. The initiative was developed as part of a medium- and long-term Action Plan aimed at combating desertification, drought, and other natural disasters in Africa. The programme's primary goal is to ensure the conservation and sustainable development of natural resources in the highlands, thereby contributing to improving the quality of life for the local population.
